DFA Funds
If one is looking for the ultimate in index funds, then seek out information on Dimensional Fund Advisors (DFA). Unfortunately, one cannot purchase these funds through a broker as we can ETFs. Rather, one needs to purchase DFA funds through an approved advisor. One such advisor is Index Funds Advisors or IFA.
Here are a few references to get you started in your DFA search.
The following reference explains the process one needs to go through to gain access to DFA index funds.

This reference compares DFA funds with Vanguard funds.
At this site, a blogger briefly talks about the Porsche of funds.
Follow this link to an interesting newspaper article on DFA funds.
And here is one more link from Merriman. There is a lot of meat in this link. I would need to check it out, but I think Merriman is a DFA approved advisor. Within the Merriman site are a number of other interesting links. Take a little time to digest this information.
